No. An inactive company cannot renew its LEI.
If the company has been dissolved, liquidated, merged, or is no longer active, the LEI should not be renewed. Instead, the LEI record should be updated through a Challenge.
What should I do instead?
You should submit a Challenge to update the LEI record with the correct entity status.
A Challenge is a request to update or correct the reference data of an existing LEI record. It can be used when the information on the LEI record is incorrect or outdated.
When should I submit a Challenge?
You should submit a Challenge if the LEI record shows incorrect or outdated information, such as:
- The company is inactive, dissolved, liquidated, or merged
- The legal name is incorrect
- The address is outdated
- The entity status is wrong
- The parent entity information is incorrect
- Other Level 1 or Level 2 data is inaccurate
How to submit a Challenge
- Log in to your user account.
- Open the LEI record.
- Go to the Challenge tab.
- Submit the Challenge with the correct information.
- Attach or provide any relevant official documentation, if available.
The LOU will review the Challenge and cross-check the information with public sources. If the information is confirmed, the LEI record will be updated.
How long does it take?
Most Challenges are resolved within 1 to 3 business days, depending on the complexity and whether documentation is required.
Important
Please do not renew an LEI for an inactive company. Inactive entities are not eligible for renewal.
If an inactive entity renews its LEI by mistake, the renewal may not be valid and the paid fee may not be refundable.
Once the LEI is marked as inactive, you will no longer receive renewal reminders for it.
